Hydra, an island rich in history and traditions, is until today a source of inspiration and creativity for artists and intellectuals. It was one of the major cultural centers of Greece and gathered, at times, many personalities of Art and Letters from Greece and abroad, which made it one of the most important center of artistic creativity.
The island has an important tradition in the production of its own artists and writers. Panagiotis Tetsis, the leading Greek painter, was born and still lives in Hydra. At the port, the School of Fine Arts encourages new talents.
The visual arts are supported by individuals and institutions and many Greek and foreign artists come and exhibit their projects, galleries, events and traditional folk art. You can often see at the harbor, a yacht, fancy and cleverly decorated by the American artist Jeff Koons.
Hydra hosts every year, major exhibitions at the initiative of collector Pauline Karpida in HydraWorkshop, which is in its 17th year of operation, of the visual artist Dimitris Antonitsis in Hydra School Project, which operates in the old Gymnasium, at the Mansion of Sachtouris for 14 years, and of the collector Dakis Joannou in the Project Space of the Deste Foundation.
Finally, during the summer months there are held too many exhibitions,
especially in the Art Hall "Melina Mercouri", in Deste, and in other art spaces. |
